Who were the Huguenots?
Correct Answer: Protestant refugees from France
The Huguenots were French Protestants (Calvinists) who were persecuted in Catholic France. Following the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685 by King Louis XIV, which removed their religious protections, tens of thousands of Huguenots fled France as refugees.
Many settled in Britain — particularly in London, Canterbury and Norwich — where they brought valuable skills in weaving, silversmithing and other crafts that greatly enriched British industry. The Huguenots are one of Britain's most significant migrant communities and an early example of refugees contributing positively to British society.
