What did the Education Act of 1944 introduce?
Correct Answer: Free secondary education in England and Wales
The Education Act of 1944 (known as the Butler Act, after Conservative minister R.A. Butler) introduced free secondary education for all children in England and Wales. Before this, secondary schooling was not free and many children could not afford to attend.
The Act created the tripartite system of secondary schooling: grammar schools, secondary modern schools and technical schools. It also raised the school leaving age to 15. Primary education had already been free and universal for some time — the 1944 Act extended this universality to the secondary stage.
