Why is recycling important? Select TWO reasons.
Correct Answers: Using recycled materials to make new products uses less energy than using raw materials; Less rubbish is created, so the amount being put into landfill is reduced
There are two key reasons why recycling is important:
1. It uses less energy — using recycled materials to make new products requires significantly less energy than processing raw materials. For example, recycling aluminium uses 95% less energy than producing it from bauxite ore 2. It reduces landfill — recycling means less rubbish is created overall, so less waste goes into landfill sites, which conserve land and reduce greenhouse gas emissions from decomposing waste
In the UK, households are encouraged to recycle through coloured bin collections — typically separate bins for general waste, recycling (plastics, paper, glass) and food waste. Local councils organise waste collection as part of their statutory duties.
