Who introduced ‘shampooing’ in Britain?
Correct Answer: Sake Dean Mahomet
Sake Dean Mahomet (1759–1851) introduced "shampooing" to Britain. Born in India, he came to Britain and opened the first Indian restaurant in London (the Hindoostane Coffee House, 1810). He later moved to Brighton, where he opened a "shampooing" vapour bath — a form of therapeutic Indian head massage.
His treatments became very popular and he was appointed "Shampooing Surgeon" to both King George IV and King William IV. The word "shampoo" derives from the Hindi word chāmpo, meaning "to massage." Sake Dean Mahomet is celebrated as a pioneer of multiculturalism and an important figure in British social history.
