Why was Queen Mary known as ‘Bloody Mary’?
Correct Answer: She was a devout Catholic and persecuted Protestants
Queen Mary I was known as "Bloody Mary" because she was a devout Catholic who persecuted Protestants during her reign (1553–1558). She reversed the Protestant reforms introduced under her brother Edward VI and returned England to Catholic rule.
During her reign, nearly 300 Protestants were burned at the stake for refusing to convert to Catholicism. This brutal suppression earned her the nickname "Bloody Mary". She was succeeded by her half-sister, Elizabeth I, who re-established Protestantism.
