Who were the suffragettes?
Correct Answer: A group who used civil disobedience to gain the vote for women
The suffragettes were members of the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU), founded by Emmeline Pankhurst in 1903.
They used civil disobedience — including chaining themselves to railings, setting fire to postboxes, and going on hunger strikes — to campaign for women's right to vote.
In 1918, women over 30 who met property requirements were given the vote; in 1928, all women over 21 gained the vote on equal terms with men.
