In the new Church of England created by Henry VIII, who had the power to appoint bishops and order how people should worship?
Correct Answer: The King
When Henry VIII broke from the Roman Catholic Church and established the Church of England (c. 1534), he made the English monarch the Supreme Head of the Church.
This transferred from the Pope to the King the power to appoint bishops, set doctrine, and determine how people should worship.
This is known as the Royal Supremacy. It was confirmed by the Act of Supremacy (1534). Today the monarch remains the Supreme Governor of the Church of England.
