What sort of battle was ‘the Battle of Britain’?
Correct Answer: An aerial battle against the Germans.
The Battle of Britain was an aerial battle fought against Nazi Germany in the summer and autumn of 1940. It was the first major military campaign fought entirely in the air.
After the fall of France, Hitler planned to invade Britain (Operation Sea Lion). The German Luftwaffe attempted to destroy the Royal Air Force (RAF) and gain air superiority over the English Channel and southern England. The RAF, including pilots from across the Commonwealth and occupied Europe, successfully defended Britain. Winston Churchill famously said of the RAF pilots: "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few."
