Life in the UK Test 36

After King Alfred the Great defeated the Vikings, many of the Viking invaders stayed in Britain, especially in the east and north of England, in an area called what?
Correct Answer: Danelaw
After King Alfred the Great of Wessex defeated the Vikings, a peace agreement was reached by which the Vikings were allowed to remain in England in an area of the east and north known as the Danelaw. This region was governed by Danish law rather than English law.
The Danelaw's influence is still visible today in many English place names — particularly those ending in "-by" (meaning "farm" or "village", e.g. Derby, Whitby), "-thorpe" and "-thwaite", which are of Viking origin. Alfred's descendants eventually reclaimed these areas.
