When did rugby originate?
Correct Answer: In the 19th century
Rugby originated in the 19th century. According to tradition, the game was invented in 1823 when William Webb Ellis, a pupil at Rugby School in Warwickshire, picked up the ball and ran with it during a game of football.
The sport formalised its rules in the mid-19th century and split into Rugby Union and Rugby League in 1895. The Rugby World Cup trophy is named the Webb Ellis Cup in his honour.
