Booking your official Life in the UK Test (also known as the British Citizenship Test or ILR Settlement Test) requires choosing an approved UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) test centre managed by PSI Services. There are over 60 official Life in the UK test centres operating across England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland in 2026.

Before paying the £50 official booking fee on GOV.UK, we strongly recommend completing our 40 Free Life in the UK Practice Tests and scoring at least 21 out of 24 (87%+) on our 16 Timed Mock Exams (1–16).

Key Official UKVI Test Centre Rules (2026)

According to official UK Home Office and UKVI booking regulations:

  • Official Booking Fee: £50 (never pay third-party booking websites charging £80–£120; book exclusively at gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test).
  • Minimum Booking Notice: At least 3 full days in advance.
  • Postcode Rule: When booking on GOV.UK, the system shows the 5 closest test centres to your UK postcode. You should select one of these 5 centres so your residency address matches your test region.
  • Exam Format at the Centre: 24 multiple-choice questions on a touchscreen/desktop computer, a 45-minute time limit, and a 75% pass mark (18 out of 24 correct answers).
  • Pass Notification: Your result is issued electronically via email and tied to a Unique Reference Number (URN) that never expires.

Step-by-Step: How to Book Your Test Centre on GOV.UK

  1. Prepare Your Exact Identity Document: You must bring the exact same original ID to the test centre that you use when booking online:
    • Valid passport (even if expired, check current UKVI biometric rules, though an in-date passport is strongly advised)
    • UK Biometric Residence Permit (BRP), Biometric Residence Card (BRC), or eVisa / share code details as specified on GOV.UK
    • EU/EEA National Identity Card or UK Travel Document
  2. Enter Your Postcode accurately: Ensure your name, date of birth, and postcode match your official ID letter-for-letter. Any spelling mismatch at the test centre security desk will result in refusal to sit the exam without a £50 refund.
  3. Select Your Date and Time: You can get a full £50 refund only if you cancel or reschedule at least 3 full days (72 hours) before your appointment.

What Happens Inside the Test Centre on Exam Day?

  • Arrive 30 Minutes Early: Security checks include identity verification, a digital photograph, and locking away all phones, smartwatches, coats, and notes in a secure locker.
  • Practice Tutorial First: Before the 45-minute clock starts for your 24 real questions, the computer lets you complete a short 4-question practice tutorial so you get comfortable with the interface.
  • Flagging Questions: Just like in our Timed Life in the UK Mock Exams (1–16), you can flag difficult questions and return to them before submitting.

How to Guarantee a First-Time Pass Before You Book

With an official national pass rate hovering around 70%, roughly 3 in 10 candidates lose their £50 fee by booking too early. Follow this 4-step checklist before booking your slot:
